Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue and local anesthetic injection sites may be slightly tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm.
Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a protective restoration provided by your restorative dentist. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil,Motrin), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed. If you were given an prescription for an antibiotic, it is advised you take it exactly as prescribed. It may take up to 48 hours for an infection to respond to an antibiotic. If a pain medication was prescribed to you, please read all label warnings. Narcotic pain medications can cause drowsiness. Driving or operating machinery should not be done while taking these medications.NOTE: Alcohol intake is not advised while taking any of these medications.
Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should significant swelling develop, please contact this office immediately. If the root canal has not been completed:
Some root canal procedures may require 2 or more appointments to compete the root canal treatment. You should have been scheduled for a completion appointment prior to leaving our office today. If you do not have this appointment, please call our office to schedule one.
The opening in your tooth has been restored with a temporary filling material. It is not unusual for a thin layer to wear away between appointments. If you think the entire temporary filling has come out, please contact our office.
If the root canal has been completed:
You will have been instructed by our staff to call your restorative dentist as soon as possible to have the permanent restoration placed. The root canal system has been permanently sealed. However, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary restoration. A follow-up restoration must be placed to protect your tooth against fracture and decay, thus ensuring long-term success.
A complete report of treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. Included in your treatment is a follow-up examination to evaluate the progress of healing. This appointment will require only a few minutes and no additional fee will be charged for the first check-up visit. Please call for an appointment 6-12 months after completion of your root canal, or as instructed by our staff.
